From Exercise Mats to Stationary Bikes

December 1st, 2009

I still feel like a child inside. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and locating a real mature man. I might have considered the delivery of my 2nd child would have altered it, yet I still seem to be in self-denial of the aging process.

Speaking of aging — or instead fighting it off — my wife and I moved into a new house and this home possesses space in its basement for the exercise room my dear wfe had always desired. But I am seeing dollar signs when I ponder the many big and small items essential, from the required but oft-neglected benches for weight-lifting and exercise mat to determining the best of the many stationary bicycles. Exercise bikes can be tricky these days. Do you go with a recumbent or an upright bike? Should I go with an analog or digital?

And then my wife appears determined to get an elliptical machine too. Yes you read that accurately. A stationary bike and an elliptical trainer — not just one or the other. My guess is that it will go with the stretch mark treatment she began using after the birth of youngest child. Wow I’ll get it for that joke.

I have to be deliberate with the budget because our new house is a bit more of a fixer-upper. We wanted it this way, but we still have to cautiously budget every little thing, down to the knobs for cabinets (I’m not kidding). My wife has a pretty ambitious kitchen remodeling project projected, but must remind her the bathroom sinks she desires installed will cost a pretty penny, too.

Thankfully, she and I both enjoy the organic, rustic style, so we’re furnishing our new home with furniture which is unfinished. It still involves a little finishing, but she and I can keep our expenses down and create higher quality furniture than we could buy anywhere anyways.

I found a great coffee table with some nice, raw knotting and a console table in matching cedar. For our outdoor patio we’re exploring outside fireplaces and we will furnish with some budget wicker furniture to start.

Providing for a new home may seem so mature, but I cannot help but feel like I am merely playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture merely feel like a new generation of toys.
